MARKED DROP IN ROAD DEATHS :FEWER NABBED FOR DRINK DRIVING

Just saw this article on the Straits Times on 16th July 2015, safer roads in Singapore as we see a sharp drop in traffic fatalities by 12.4% decrease and the number arrested for drink driving was dropped from 1,495 in 2014 to 1,258 in 2015 ( a drop in 15.9%).  This is a good sign that our motorists are more aware and practice safer driving now.

However, the Traffic Police ( TP) mentioned that injury accidents have increased and that is not very good news.  From 3,733 to 3,939 cases in June this and last year respectively.  Assistant commissioner for Traffic Police mentioned that this could be due to the accidents involving motorcyclists , the number of motorcyclists accidents have risen and about 40% is actually the fault of the motorcyclists themselves.  He carried on to say that TP will roll out initiatives to target more than 500,000 foreign and local motorcyclists here.  The TP will also be launching a slew of measures to boost safety!

He added that motorists are more alert towards more visible signs on the roads such as painted speed cameras.  TP will also be launching a three month trial in Ocotber with 2000 cabbies where they will be informed about red light cameras and speed enforcement areas to their mobile data terminals.

Lets continue to keep our roads safe and sound!!
