The number of drink driving related accidents have decreased by 2.9% from 138 accidents in the year 2015 to 134 accidents in the year 2016.  Motorists getting arrested for drink driving is also decreased by 7.9% to 2,121 in 2016.  Fatalities related to drink driving has been decreased only 9 in 2016 compared to the 14 in 2015.  Even though the situation has improved, the Traffic Police still urge Motorists to be careful and alert on the roads. Drink driving and also accidents due to consumption of drugs that cause drowsiness can be avoided if the motorists practice caution when they consume such items.

Regular enforcement actions and roadblocks to deter reckless driving behaviour will still continue to ensure the roads are safe for all users.

As of now there are still no changes to the current penalty being imposed on drink and drunk driving offenders.

  • 1st offence: Fine between $1,000 and $5,000 or jail up to six months. Lose driving privileges for 12-48 months.
  • 2nd offence: Fine between $3,000 and $10,000 and imprisonment for up to 12 months.
  • 3rd offence: Fine up to $30,000 and imprisonment for up to 3 years.

Traffic Police might be reviewing the penalties to include harsher punishment.
