Learning to Drive in Singapore

I am writing this because it is coming soon.  Time really flies.  1 and half more years to go and I can start afresh again.  When I got my licence, it was so long ago.  1998?  I was merely 19.  During those days, although automatic gear cars are coming up, all driving tests were carried out using the manual geared cars.  People having ” psychomoto “problems need longer time to deploy the clutches and also shifting the gear.  This is the reason why licence then was so precious, not only was it expensive to learn and pass the tests, it was a lot of chore as those days there were only 2 real driving schools : The Kaki Bukit Driving School and the Bukit Batok Driving centre.  There were a lot of private instructors for hire at the same time.

These days, it is much more convenient to receive driving instructions.  You can also chose to take your tests using Automatic cars making this process much easier for the people with Psychomoto problems.

Process of Getting the Drivers’ Licence in Singapore

1. Register a private account at any of the 3 driving schools and apply for the Basic Theory Test (BTT).  You can study your own basic theory by yourself by purchasing the Basic Theory Hand book and book the test dates by yourself.  The cost for taking the test is SG$6.  The Basic Theory Test if passed is valid for 5 years from the date you pass.

  1. BBDC (at Bukit Batok West Avenue 5)
  2. CDC (at Ubi Ave 4)
  3. SSDC (at 2 Woodlands Industrial Park E4)

2. If you pass your BTT (at least 45/50), apply for the Final Theory Test (FTT) and a provisional driving license (PDL).

  1. Cost of PDL: $25
  2. PDL is only valid for 6 months, to renew, another $25 is needed
  3. PDL holders are not allowed on the expressway
  4. You will need the PDL for driving lessons: PDL is needed for going on to the roads in Singapore.
  5. FTT cost $6

3.While waiting for the Final Theory test.  You can start to take classes.

Choosing the right driving instructions is much easier these days as there are more schools and also private instructions are of better quality because there are tougher competitions.

4. Once you pass your FTT (at least 45/50), you can book your Traffic Police (TP) driving test.

  1. You need to pass your driving practical test within two years from the Final Theory.
  2. The practical test will cost about $150-$200, therefore it is best if you can pass within one or two tries.

If you pass the test, then CONGRATS you can proceed to buy your probation plate and paste it on your car, IF NOT Repeat from point 2 -4.
