Speaking at the launch of a new anti-drink driving campaign by the Traffic Police and the Singapore Road Safety Council, in conjunction with partners like Zouk, Carlsberg and Harley Davidson. Mr Lee commented that harsher punishment should be imposed on repeat offenders, who just cannot change their drink driving habits.  This can serve as a deterrent for other motorists that they should be safe drivers.

Based on the police statistics, the first 9 months , there were 103 accidents involving drink driving.  These resulted in 3 fatalities and 153 injuries.  There were also about 1,540 motorists arrested for drink driving.  Although this is number is lower than last year.  It is still important that we reduce the level of drink and drunk driving to as low as possible.

Based on a case last year, where a taxi driver was left bed ridden for 8 months on the sick bed before he died, due to an accident caused by a drink driver.  The driver was only given 8 months jail term with 4,000 dollars fine and 8 years of suspension.  All these for the life of one man.   Such acts of irresponsibility to be reduced to 0 as far as possible.

Festive season is round the corner, TP is tightening up the checks for Drink and drunk driving.  It is important that the road users ensure that they drink and not drive and at the same time make sure that they use the roads responsibly.

With campaigns with sponsors to prevent drink driving campaign, the campaign hope to rope in family members and friends of ex offenders to take part in reminding them to be responsible and careful road users.  DRINK: DON’T DRIVE!
