Drink Driving Deaths in Singapore

There are actually not many drink driving deaths in a year in Singapore.  This is maybe due to the fact that education on drink driving is very successful and also recently, public sales of alcohol and drinking publicly has been curfewed to 10:30 pm ( SIN TIME).  This is why even if you want to do something crazy, it is not that easy too.

In 2014, there was a 2.2% drop in the number of drink driving cases, this is something good to know and also really a relieve for road users.  Because most of the time, drunk drivers are not able to control themselves in an accident and can cause a fatality.

Singapore Road Safety Council, Traffic Police and STCars launched the STCars Anti-Drink Drive (ADD) Campaign 2014 on 11 December 2014 at Bang Bang, Pan Pacific Hotel. Associate Professor Mr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Transport graced the event as the Guest-of-Honour (GOH). This campaign aim to educate motorists about drink driving and how their friends and family members can play a part to help the motorist avoid such an offence.
“Don’t drive to drink. And you’ll never drink and drive”. This has been the campaign’s tagline since 2009 and is aimed at reminding motorists to exercise personal responsibility during this festive season.
Whilst Traffic Police will continue with its tough enforcement stance against drink driving, the ADD campaign focuses more on drinking and driving on celebratory moments and festival seasons. More importantly, the campaign also highlights how the community as a whole can help to make our roads safer by cutting away dangerous driving habits like drink driving.

The highlights for the event are:

  • 1. Launch of new creative posters with slogans which highlight the campaign tagline;
  • 2. Flag-Off of taxis decked out with the campaign designs;
  • 3. Theme for the campaign – “Let the Party Go On”;
  • 4. Tour of static display;
  • 5. Presentation of tokens of appreciation to campaign sponsors.

Drink driving is a very serious offence and the penalties are severe. Drink drivers, on conviction, will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months, which would, in effect, invalidate their driving licences. These motorists will have to undergo the theory and practical tests all over again in order to obtain their driving licences before they will be allowed on the roads. First-time offenders can be fined between $1,000 and $5,000, or jailed up to 6 months, while repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of $30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to 3 years. They may also receive up to six strokes of the cane should death or serious injury occur.

This is no laughing matter, and even after you get your licence back, there is a high price to pay too.  The insurance company will charge a higher price when you purchase the car insurance as you will be deemed a high risk driver.  At the same time, your punishment for repeated offence might double or be more severe as the judge will not pity you the second time.
