Common Traffic Rules that you should know in Singapore

Booking1

We took our highway code, we passed it, start to drive. Years down the road, we forget all that we have learnt. When caught, sometimes we give ourselves excuse: I did not know that. Too bad, in Singapore’s context, ignorance is not acceptable in the court or in TP’s context. Let us refresh some of the common traffic rules which we may have overlooked.

SPEED LIMIT FOR VEHICLES IN SINGAPORE

Speed Limit Table

Speed Limit Table

Usually the speed cameras are the ones to detect the speed limit.  Sometimes TP will also station mobile speed capture cameras on the overhead bridges.  They usually operate on peak hours so do be careful when you drive during those timing.

Another unexpected area is inside the tunnel.  Do take note that some speed limit inside the tunnel is 70KM/hr.  Yes, you might not be aware of it.  The reason is that if an accident occur inside the tunnel, it will take a longer time to evacuate the vehicles.  Therefore prevention is better than cure.  Always check the speed limit before entering the tunnel.

USAGE OF HANDPHONE ON THE ROADS

If you do not know, as long as the Mobile Handphone is IN YOUR HANDS while the TP pull you over, or they took a shot of you holding the phone while driving.  It is considered an OFFENCE.  Please if you are driving, just concentrate on the driving.  It doesn’t matter if you are in a Jam or what.  Listen to the music or talk to your passenger, just DO NOT TOUCH the phone.  If you need your phone as a GPS, please get a handphone holder.  It is not worth being deducted 12 points for holding the phone while driving.

BUS LANE OPERATION

Even if you are rushing for time, PLEASE do not use the bus lane.  For all you might know, the TP is round the corner waiting to take a snap shot of your car.

Bus lane timing

Bus lane timing

Look out of the Red line to distinguish the Full day bus lanes.  My take is if you do not remember the timing.  Just avoid the bus lane when you drive to or leave from work.

If you think the bus lane driving is a small matter, think again, the punishment for this offence fined up to S$1000 or serve 3 months of imprisonment.
